In a previous lifetime, I went to an allergist who put me on the “caveman diet” in order to test me for food allergies. He guaranteed me that I would lose 10 pounds on this diet. HA! I think I actually gained weight because I discovered that peanut butter – lots of peanut butter – actually makes rice cakes palatable.
I picked up a copy of Dr. Gott’s No Flour, No Sugar Diet from the library last night. While perusing the sample menus, it occurred to me that my problem might not be only what I eat but how much. Portion control – humph!
When my daughter went through a gymnastics phase, after her Saturday class we would drive through McDonald’s on the way home. I would order a two-cheeseburger value meal with an extra drink. We would each eat a burger and share the little envelope of fries. I can’t imagine doing that today. Not only would I feel like I needed to eat the whole meal myself, I would want dessert as well.
I decided to shift my food diary to the day after, i.e. list what I ate yesterday, because I like to write in the morning and the time warp is just too difficult for me to manage.
What I ate yesterday:
-
Coffee w/ half ‘n’ half
-
Sausage patty
-
Eggs – 2 hard-boiled
-
OJ – 1 pt.
-
Chili w/ cheese
-
Doritos
-
GORP
-
Potato chips (reduced fat, lightly salted, but I ate a lot of them)
-
Apple
Exercise: Swearing

Hello,
I just wanted to comment on your posting. Peanut butter is not actually on the “Caveman Diet.” They are not technically a nut at all–you should stick to almonds or walnuts–they are best. And, rice cakes are forbidden too because they are a grain & also filled with high-fructose corn syrup. So, of course you did not lose weight because you did not follow the diet.
Doritoes, Potato Chips, etc. are full of refined carbs & high fructose corn chips. Orange juice isn’t best–it’s just filled with more sugar & will cause your sugar levels to spike. It’s best to eat the fruit fresh. Fries are a no-no and toss the bun if you get a burger. Coffee is okay in limited quantities, but rely on H2O. And, there’s no need to overdo the water, either. Just drink when you’re thirsty.

I am an Anthropology student and studying Native Americans. Their health began to deteriorate after corn & beans were introduced into their diet. Many now face diabetes along with other health problems.
I hope that this gives you a push in the right direction. I am a carb-junkie & am starting the diet myself.
Best of luck.
Hmmm. I thought “we” got corn and beans *from* Native Americans, and that their health deteriorated with the introduction of sugar, flour, and alcohol. My allergist’s “cave man” diet was not the same as today’s Caveman Diet. His was to ferret out food allergies, which is why rice and rice products were allowed. Looking back, I’m surprised he included peanuts, though.
